Quality Assurance

Ensuring the continuity of excellence is our Quality Care Director, Dr. Wayne T Phillips, FACSM, an internationally known Wellness and Aging expert who specializes in health-related behavior change. Dr. Phillips is a former Post-Doctoral Fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine, Professor Emeritus at Arizona State University, Dept of Exercise and Wellness, and Scientific Advisory Board Member of the International Council on Active Aging.
It is hardly surprising that many older adults worry a lot about their health and their health care. There has been an ever increasing focus on this in the media, the internet and on Capital Hill. For example, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention falls in older adults are the leading cause of injuries, hospital admissions for trauma, and deaths due to injury. Older adults also have the highest incidence of cardiovascular disease, account for 7 million cases of type 2 diabetes, and sustain 250,000 hip fractures per year. These often quoted statistics are a powerful testimony to the ‘we have to do something about it’ attitude that fuels the whole Health Care issue in the US.

At ActiveRx we have been 'doing something about it' and our results show how effective our health care provision has been. Here’s why: while much of the attention has been focused on the ‘bad news’ of health and aging, there is a whole lot of good news – and good evidence - that has not received the attention it deserves. The reality is that many of the chronic diseases and conditions that were once thought to be an unavoidable part of aging (e.g. heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, low back pain, depression) turn out to be mostly due to our lifestyle habits and behaviors. What this means is that these health conditions are preventable and even reversible particularly with the kind of behavioral approaches we have implemented in our practice. Your care therefore is as much in your hands as it is in ours!

The ActiveRx Experience
When you become a patient at ActiveRx, you will be in the care of a highly qualified team of dedicated physicians and therapists whose common goal is working with you to proactively achieve and sustain a more active, healthy lifestyle.
However excellent the medical or therapeutic care, what we now know is that the ongoing, long term health of older adults cannot be realistically achieved— or even approached— without considering the lifestyle of the person concerned The path to optimal health is to merge the 'reactive' methods of current health care with ‘pro-active’ approaches which factor in the way we live our lives. Senator Tom Harkin (D Iowa), who is taking the lead in drafting the Prevention and Public Health section of the Health Care Bill stated in a recent op-ed piece that America should be a society that is focused on prevention, good nutrition, fitness, and public health. “We also have to realize that wellness and prevention must be truly comprehensive.  It is not only about what goes on in a doctor’s office…”.

This is exciting news! Our health care system is finally headed towards the full meaning of health as first defined by the World Health Organization way back in 1948: " ...a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

In other words, we are no longer tied to the 'treatment model' which has dominated healthcare for decades and has focused exclusively on ‘the absence of disease or infirmity’. We now see the beginning of an important new pro-active movement whose goal is 'a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing' for all. ActiveRx is in the vanguard of this movement. The guiding philosophy of our 'standard of care' has always been that what ‘goes on’ with patients outside our practice will play a major part of what ‘goes on’ inside our practice. We care! And for those under our care we review and analyze lifestyle habits and use this information to guide your plan of care. This applies not only to patients who are referred to us for treatment but also to individuals who come to us for an in-depth assessment and analysis of their current health status.
